Gonzalez, a former strawweight and junior flyweight titleholder, will make the second defense of the flyweight world championship when he meets former long-reigning junior flyweight titleholder Edgar Sosa on May 16 at The Forum in Inglewood, California.
The bout will serve as the co-feature on the HBO telecast headlined by middleweight knockout artist Gennady Golovkin (32-0, 29 KOs), who will make his 14th title defense and look for his 19th knockout in a row when he meets Willie Monroe Jr. (19-1, 6 KOs).
Gonzalez, known as "Chocolatito," has been fighting regularly in Japan, Mexico and his home country of Nicaragua, where he is the most significant fighter since the late 1970s/early '80s prime of the man who was once his mentor, late Hall of Famer Alexis Arguello.
But now Gonzalez is headed to the United States to fight for the fourth time -- but for the first time on HBO.
HBO has been interested in putting Gonzalez on for quite some time, and it finally came together thanks to a deal made between K2 Promotions managing director Tom Loeffler, Golovkin's promoter, and Teiken Boxing's Akihiko Honda, Gonzalez's promoter.
